Engelberg, Switzerland
I'm impressed with Engelberg as I count three different ski lifts
operating in the summer to whisk hikers, day walkers and tourists
up the mountains encircling the valley. The Rotair,
a revolving gondola, seems to be THE lift to take as I count
over 35 tour buses in the
parking lot. The pedestrian-only main shopping
street runs for several blocks and is geared toward the day
tripper tourist. Wherever one walks
in the valley you're rewarded with great views.
Is this place
hopping or is it dead in the summer
Engelberg
is booming in the summer.
Is there a lake and/or golf course in town?
There's an 18 hole golf
course and a lake, which
had people walking, jogging and cycling around it plus, several
were fishing.
Arriving by
car the only option?
The train
will deposit you right in the middle of town.
Does the place feel claustrophobic?
The valley is around six miles long and maybe a half-mile
wide, making it quite comfortable.
Lots of choices
for acccomodations (hotels/ chalets) and do I have recommendations?
Plenty
of hotels to choose from. I stayed at the four star Ramada
Hotel Regina Titlis in the town center and give it the two
thumbs-up. I was scheduled to stay at the 100 year-old Hotel
Schweizerhof, a completely non-smoking property. However,
the hotel was full and I was given a room across the street at
their annex property, the Hotel Crystal. While the room
at the Crystal was immaculate, it was way too small
and I ended up leaving.
Could I spend
a whole summer here or would I get bored?
I could
comfortably spend a month in Engelberg.
